About Barry Ladies' Choir

Barry Ladies’ Choir is a local choir which meets every Tuesday evening at Trinity Church Hall. Our aim is to provide a forum for people who enjoy singing a wide variety of styles from classical to show songs to popular, sacred and secular, both accompanied and unaccompanied, in an atmosphere that is relaxed and friendly. The strength of the choir lies not only in the quality of its singing but also in the friendship that exists amongst its members. Many of our concerts are in aid of local and national charities as part of their fundraising activities.

More about the Choir

Barry Ladies’ Choir is a community choir – a community of ladies of all ages coming together once a week to practice our singing, prepare for concerts, plan social events, and in all these things, have fun!

The choir has existed since the 1930's and we have members who have been with us fifty years as well as new members who have joined us very recently. We welcome new people and settle them in with support from more experienced members of the choir.

Our Musical Director, Matthew Probert, has been with us since 2015 and leads us with humour, enthusiasm and commitment. He does this in close partnership with our accompanist, Chris Fossey, a talented pianist who often performs solo at our concerts.

We remember with fondness the legacies of previous Musical Directors, including Alice Jones and Peggy Weaving, whose selections of music and musical arrangements we include from time to time in our current programme.

There are three sections to the choir: altos (the low voices); second sopranos (in the middle; and sopranos (the highest voices). You can join any of these sections and see how you get on, or Matt can help you work out your vocal range and guide you to the section where your voice fits best.

We sing from musical scores but not everybody reads music. Many rely on their ears to learn the music – listening to the notes of their part being played by Chris as well as listening to the direction of Matt and watching his conducting.

The choir normally holds a couple of concerts a year, often one around Christmas and another in the Spring. From time to time, we also visit residential homes, hospitals, and take part in local events – taking our music out into the community.

We take into account the pressures on people’s time and family commitments, so we do not usually travel too far afield. Events usually last for a few hours if they are local, or perhaps a day if they are further afield. We also try to keep membership costs as low as we can (whilst still needing to cover the costs of running the choir) so that the choir is as accessible as possible.

Our rehearsals take place in Trinity Church Hall in Barry, just off Trinity Street.  The building is easily accessible with no steps.

By joining our choir, you will have our companionship, the challenge and satisfaction of learning new pieces of music, and the fun and laughter we share when we get together every week.

New members are always welcome and if anyone would like to join us please contact us via the form on the "Contact" page.  Alternatively come along to one of our rehearsals to see what we're all about.

Of course, you may not be reading about us because you want to join us, but because you would like us to sing for you or take part in an event. If this is the case, please do get in touch via the "Contact" page or by emailing barryladieschoir@gmail.com. We are always delighted to find new opportunities to perform and show you our latest programme of music.
